Derry City’s period from 1988 to 1990 was the most successful era in the club’s history. Derry City played in the League of Ireland and achieved a historic treble in the 1988–1989 season by winning the League of Ireland Premier Division, the FAI Cup, and the League of Ireland Cup. This made Derry City the first and only club to win a domestic treble in Irish football. In the following 1989–1990 season, the club remained competitive in the league and domestic cups while also representing Irish football in European competitions. Derry lost to Benfica in the first round of the 1989-90 European Cup. This period established Derry City as one of the strongest teams in Ireland at the end of the 1980s.
